Custom-Made in Platinum: Emperor Drop Earrings with Matched Pear-Cut Diamonds
A client asked us to build our Emperor drop earrings in platinum, centered on two carefully matched pear-cut diamonds — a laboratory-grown, GCAL-certified pair weighing just over four carats together. Here is a closer look at the design, the stones, and how the pair is being made.
The request
Some projects begin with a design a client already loves, and this was one of them. The client chose our Emperor drop earrings and asked that we craft them in platinum around two standout pear-cut diamonds. Below is the pair we are building for them — cut, set, and made by America’s Finest Jewelers, the way American Pearl & Diamond has worked since 1950.
A design made to move
Motion is the whole idea behind the Emperor drop. Two ribbons sweep down from each earring, their surfaces paved end to end with diamonds and anchored by a bezel-set stone at the center. The pear-cut drops below sit in open baskets, hinged so they sway with the wearer — carrying light down the length of each earring, from the lobe to the very tip.
Two pear diamonds, chosen as a pair
The centerpieces are two pear-brilliant diamonds selected to mirror one another — one drop per ear. Each is D in color, the top colorless grade, and VVS2 in clarity, cut to excellent polish and symmetry, and accompanied by its own GCAL report. Side by side they come to just over four carats — about 2.05 and 2.04 carats — and each measures close to 11.3 by 7.1 millimeters: the long, graceful pear that falls beautifully as a drop.
Each stone in a full 360° turn — left, the 2.05-carat pear; right, the 2.04-carat pear. Both D color, VVS2, GCAL-certified.
Matched this closely in shape, proportion, and light return, the finished earrings read as true mirror images — the difference between a genuine pair and two stones that simply hang near one another.
Why we chose platinum
For a white-diamond earring, platinum made the most sense. Naturally white, it holds its color without re-plating, and it grips a diamond with a dense, durable, hypoallergenic strength. Set beside D-color stones, platinum lets them show as white as they genuinely are.
Built to order in New York
Like every American Pearl & Diamond commission, this pair is being made by hand to order. Prefer a different carat weight, a different shape, or a different metal? The Emperor drop can be tailored to your taste and budget, with stones matched to suit.
Frequently asked
What is the total diamond weight?
The two pear-cut drops come to just over four carats together — about 2.05 and 2.04 carats — with additional pavé diamonds running along the ribbons.
Do the diamonds come with certification?
Yes. Each pear drop carries its own GCAL grading report and grades D in color and VVS2 in clarity, with excellent polish and symmetry.
Can the earrings be made in another metal or with different stones?
Of course. The Emperor drop can be crafted in platinum or 18K and 14K white, yellow, or rose gold, and set with your choice of diamonds or gemstones. This commission was made in platinum.
How long does a made-to-order piece take?
Most made-to-order pieces are finished within a few weeks, depending on the stones and finishing work. We share a firm timeline once the design is set.
